    Description

    A simply STUNNING
    pair
    of
    very high quality
, beautifully executed porcelain 'Tall Trees' sugar sifters (or salt shakers).
These were one of the 3 most popular sugar sifter models ever produced by Clarice Cliff Gotham.
Originally sold in Designer Shops worldwide in the 1970's at high prices, this model is no longer made.
    While these models
    occasionally
surface at antique and second-hand markets they are rarely in mint condition however the pair on offer are 'new - old stock' have never been previously used or circulated and as such, have been listed as 'new' rather than 'used'.
    This pair are
    original full sized
models measuring 15cms or 6 inches tall, with a base diameter of 8cms or 3.25 inches. Each with orange hand painted tops and base ring.

    History:
Conical sugar sifters were first introduced to England by Clarice Cliff in 1930 with the idea of cheering the population away from the general gloom following the Great Depression stock market crash of 1929.Their revolutionary new-age shape and vivid painting were not understood at all by the public and they initially turned out to be very poor sellers.
The initial unpopularity of these revolutionary sugar sifters slowly reversed itself and by WW2  had become one of their most sought after and highly desirable products!

    'Yesterday'
    (
Wizard of Oz re-visited). Tells its own true but slightly forlorn story of 'hope' following the American Stock Market collapse of 1929 and the onset of the Great Depression. It's modelled on the historic village of Bangalow near Byron Bay. All of the shops depicted are still in existence today and of course with the passage of time, their prosperity
    has
    totally returned.
    'Yesterday'
depicts its stylised presentation of this 1930's group of village shops on a mythical yellow brick road of intrigue and adventure, overseen by a group of old terrace houses high on the hill above the town. All this nestled below a magical blue-leafed tree of 'Hope' and 'Prosperity'.
