    Description

Vintage 1911 JW York & Sons Silver Shepherds Crook Cornet Ser#29609 w/MPC & Lyre
We are cleaning out the back of our warehouse - this is being sold in as is good used condition.  Pictured is the actual item you will get so please look at the pictures closely.  We did not see any chips and it will need to be cleaned when you receive it.  This is an excellent vintage cornet!  It has some patina forming.  We did clean up around the engraving and a little inside the bell. The engraving on the horn reads "Made by JW York & Sons Grand Rapids Mich." on the bell and "Union MPBPB & SWU Label" on the bottom of the second valve casing. The serial number is 29609 and an online search suggests this is a 1911 vintage cornet. It has a gold wash bell and gold wash rim on the outside of the bell.  It looks like nearly all of the original finish is basically in near perfect condition. It does not look like there is really a point where any of the finish is missing.  It has probably just been sitting for years on end and could use some polishing.  Someone put the main tuning slide in upside down and so it needs to be flipped the other way around as there is a brace for the rod to go through.  The stopper is missing and not included.  All of the other tuning slides pull extremely easily and the valves are quiet with fantastic action. There is an additional tuning slide included as well as the original J.W. York & Sons Grand Rapids, Mich. lyre. The mouthpiece included is also likely original. It says "York & Sons Besson Model 5".  On the first and third valve tuning slides there are markings on the inner slides with a line labeled "A", a line labeled "B", and pushed all the way in on the outside is the letter "C".  This paired with the fact that there are two main tuning slides makes us believe that this instrument could be played in either A, Bb or C depending on which slides and how far pulled out they are.  We are not 100% sure as we cannot test this because the main tuning slide is currently stuck.  When we test played the instrument it played beautifully up and down the register.  It has really nice intonation and a nice rich tone.  This is a very fun instrument to play and we can hardly believe it is 110 years old and in such good condition! It comes in its original case which is in older used condition.  The handle on the case is broken.
